At the beginning of September, smartphone users from Cuba complained about blocking – on thematic forums , in the Facebook and Reddit communities , photos of devices appeared in the message: “Xiaomi policy does not allow the sale of this product or its provision in the territory where you tried to activate it.”
Later, information about blocking from users from other countries began to appear. XDA-Developers reports that residents of Iran, Syria, Sudan, North Korea and the Crimean Peninsula also faced the problem.
Although the company is not officially represented on the US market, it refers to local laws: the listed territories are under sanctions, Xiaomi itself says about the export ban . Nevertheless, many users bought devices in foreign stores and up to this point have been using them without critical restrictions.
Presumably, so far only buyers who have activated the device in a prohibited area are faced with the problem. Smartphones activated before import are not subject to blocking, as well as devices with modified firmware.
In June, the company came out on top in the world in device sales, overtaking Samsung and Apple, and by the end of the entire second quarter of 2021 it was in second place.
